The Best Spots in Hyde Park Village

Leisurely strolls with the dog; teens posing in front of street murals; couples walking arm in arm… I don’t know what it is, but there’s something about Hyde Park Village that makes you just want to sit on a bench and soak in your surroundings. If you’re from Tampa, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

Lucky for me, my house is a short 5-minute walk from this cute little shopping square, so I’ve gotten quite familiar with the places I like the most. Keep on reading for my favorite spots in Hyde Park Village!

FOOD & DRINK

bartaco Whether it’s a casual lunch during the week or happy hour on a Friday, my go-to has got to be bartaco. The tapas style menu highlights their upscale tacos (the cauliflower and glazed pork belly are my favs!), and their homemade guac is actually to die for. The open-air interior is super laid back and chic, and there’s also lounge seating on the outdoor patio (dogs are welcome!) NOTE: If you’re planning to go on the weekend, get there at least a half hour early to put your name down – it get PACKED on Fridays and Saturdays!

OnSwann – This is the type of place that makes you feel 10 times cooler just by walking in. It’s not over the top, but the creative and contemporary dishes make it feel slightly more upscale. At lunch, I typically go for the black bean burger or the kale salad; at dinner, I end up eating all of my mom’s short rib ragu pasta… safe to say, it’s UNREAL. But regardless of what time you go, I highly recommend you kick off your meal with the cheese share board – it’s an assortment of cheeses, fruit spreads, and crisp toast on a rustic wooden platter. This place can’t be beat!

The Hyppo – On a blistering summer afternoon, all I crave is something ice cold and fruity. The Hyppo answers my prayers. With 450 flavors ranging from starfruit to banana chocolate to cucumber lemon mint (my personal favorite), these homemade ice pops are the perfect sweet snack. And BONUS: they’re totally guilt free! Made of only fruit, fresh herbs, and cane sugar.

SHOPPING

Downtown Dog – Okay. So when I say I walk my dog, Ginger, to this store, I’m totally lying. SHE drags ME there every single time, without fail! After playtime with the owner’s yellow lab, she enjoy an all-natural organic treat on her way out. A definite must-see for all my fellow dog owners!

The Paper Source – During grad party season at the end of my senior year, this place was my sanctuary. It’s one of those places where you can find the perfect gift for just about anyone. “I love naps” pillows, handheld arcade machines, massive champagne glasses… even a giant unicorn yard sprinkler is available for purchase! There’s also an entire section dedicated to gift wrapping and stationary. I’m not the least bit artistic, but I feel like I can conquer the artsy world in this store!

Surf Outfitters – What is Florida without a good ol’ surf shop? Thankfully, we have this little gem to satisfy all our beachy fantasies. While the prices are crazy expensive, which is typical of surf shops, the bikinis, cover-ups, and accessories are drool-worthy. My advice? Head directly to the sale bin in the back of the store. I’ve found some awesome pieces here that were super discounted!
